At times whole structures are relocated from one place to another. This can be a very expensive proposition and is generally undertaken by rich individuals or wealthy institutions. The reasons can be many, and include regeneration of an urban area, an owner of a land which has been sold wishing to keep his house, etc. Also the building in question can be of historic importance.

At present the relocation industry is a thriving business. The international movers (IASM) is a worldwide organization which has members from many countries around the world like Argentina, Peru, Australia, etc. These companies help move structures from many parts of the world and can transport it any destination required.

How are the buildings moved? A steel framework is attached temporarily to provide support to the foundation of the building, and hydraulic jacks are used to life the building in the air temporarily. Beams of wood, called as cribs, are then used to support the structure. When the building is at a sufficient height, the structure is then placed on trucks or hydraulic dollies which are specially designed to be able to withstand the enormous weight of the structure.

After removals of the structure from its foundation, it can be transported to any given destination. International transportation requires a lot of credit. For the relocation of smaller property, generally banks provide the finance. But such projects face many problems as possession cannot be taken by the lender until the structure reaches its new destination, and it requires payment in full before movement.House removals

Movement of structures generally involves whole moves and reassembly moves. Reassembly moves involve breaking down of the structure in pieces and transporting it all separately. The pieces are then joined together upon arrival to form the original building. This is the easier form of moving, and chances of success are usually high. The likelihood of the structure taking any damage also remains very low.

The other form is moving the structure as a whole. This is a very difficult proposition. Medium size mansions can weigh in at 200 tons, and transporting all this without the correct support can be a problem. Most structures are delicate and inadvertent damage can be irreparable. The heaviest building known to have been moved stands at a staggering 2638 tons, and was actually carried away for 3 whole city blocks in Minnesota.

A famous reassembly move was the removal of the London Bridge back in 1968. The bridge was sold for about 2.5 million dollars, and was reconstructed in Arizona. Some of the bridge had to be left behind as tax due! This bridge is one of the main attractions of the theme park which has been built around it, and is one of the biggest crowd pullers.

International movers

Often movement can be difficult. For example if houses have to be moved, all the obstacles in the path like branches and overhead cables have to be first cleared. Only then can the removal take place.

Historically the relocation industry is one of the oldest and the biggest recycling industry. The industry is a very valuable asset for any country and provides much employment. Other benefits are that it also helps in preserving important natural or artificial structures. Needless waste is avoided, and affordable housing can be made available with help of relocation.
